anvā car

In Sanskrit grammar, अन्वाचर् (Anvācar or Anvācara) is derived from the root
anv- (अन्व्) meaning to follow and √car (चर्) meaning to move or act. Thus,
अन्वाचर् literally means “to follow in action or speech”. Its significance lies
mainly in the context of grammatical sequencing and semantic coherence
within a sentence or verse (श्लोक).

Core Concept: Anvaya

  1. Definition: Anvācar relates closely to the concept of अन्वय (Anvaya), which
  2. refers to the logical order or syntactic connection of words in a sentence.
  3. Purpose: Sanskrit often allows flexible word order due to grammatical markers
  4. like vibhakti (case endings). However, for comprehension and semantic clarity,
  5. words must be "unzipped" and arranged in their underlying logical sequence—this
  6. process is termed अन्वय (Anvaya).
  7. Role of Anvācar: It denotes the grammatic and semantic following relationship
  8. among words, guiding how modifiers agree with their dependents and how verbs
  9. connect to their arguments.

Steps in Anvaya Analysis

  1. Padavibhāgaḥ (Word Segmentation): Break compound words and identify separate
  2. lexical units.
  3. Sandhi Analysis: Resolve combined sounds (sandhi) into distinct words.
  4. Vākya-viśleṣaṇam (Word Characterization): Classify words as noun, verb,
  5. adjective, etc., and identify case and number.
  6. Ākāṅkṣā-krameṇa Anvaya (Sequence Unzipping): Arrange the words in the logical
  7. order following grammatical rules.
  8. Vyākaraṇa Anśa (Grammatical Checking): Verify that case endings, number, and
  9. gender are consistent.

Example

Shloka:

वसुदेवसुतं देवं कंसचाणूरमर्दनम्।
  • Step 1: Break words → वसुदेवसुतं, देवं, कंसचाणूरमर्दनम्.
  • Step 2: Identify the verb (here implied: “I worship”).
  • Step 3: Determine relations → वसुदेवसुतं (object), देवं (predicate aspect),
  • कंसचाणूरमर्दनम् (descriptive adjunct).
  • Step 4: Unzip in sequence → वसुदेवसुतं देवकीपरमानन्दं कंसचाणूरमर्दनं जगद्गुरुं
  • देवं कृष्णम् (अहं) वन्दे।

This restructuring follows the natural sequence of meaning, which is what Anvācar
ensures grammatically.

Summary

  • Anvācar (अन्वाचर्) is the principle of following or sequence in Sanskrit grammar,
  • highlighting the way words semantically and syntactically follow one another in
  • a sentence.
  • It is crucial for anvaya analysis, which allows correct comprehension of verses,
  • especially in poetry and scriptural texts where metrical constraints obscure word
  • order.

  • Mastering Anvācar is key to reading, parsing, and translating Sanskrit scriptures
  • accurately.
