anvaya vat

The term अन्वयवत् (Anvaya-vat) is a compound in Sanskrit, derived from
अन्वय (Anvaya), meaning “connection, sequence, or logical association,”
and the suffix वत् (–vat), which conveys “having the nature of” or “like.”

Core Meanings of Anvaya

Logical and Grammatical Sense:

In Sanskrit grammar (Vyākaraṇa) and Nyāya logic, anvaya refers to the
positive concomitance or agreement between elements. For example:
पर्वतो वह्निमान् धूमवत्त्वात् (parvato vahnimān dhūmavattvāt) — “Wherever
there is smoke, there is fire.”

Here, the presence of fire is invariably associated with the presence of
smoke; this relation is called अन्वय (anvaya).

अन्वयवत् (Anvaya-vat) thus describes something that follows a logical
consequence or necessary connection, i.e., it behaves according to
the natural or logical order.

Lineage and Family Sense:

In classical texts, anvaya also denotes race, lineage, family, or succession.

Anvaya-vat, in this sense, can refer to a person born of a noble or
connected family, or possessing continuity of heritage. For example,
Manusmriti 8.332:

स्यान्साहसं त्वअन्वयवत् प्रसभं कर्म यत्कृतम् — “An act performed boldly, following
the natural order of lineage,” highlighting connection with family or tradition.

General Semantic Extension:

Having a connection or consequence — i.e., whatever is described as
अन्‍वयवत् is consequential, adherent, or in proper sequence, whether in
logic, grammar, or social/familial context.

It is contrasted with निरन्वय (Niranvaya), meaning lack of connection
or discontinuity.
