aparāhṇa

The Sanskrit word "aparāhṇa" refers to the late
afternoon, specifically the time between noon
and sunset.
Etymology and Literal Meaning

The word "aparāhṇa" is derived from two components: "apara" (after)
and "ahṇa" (daytime or daylight), collectively meaning the period
following midday. It traditionally denotes the second half of the day
before evening.

Usage in Hindu Rituals and Daily Life

In classical Hindu texts and astrological references, the day is divided
into specific time periods for prayers, meals, and daily duties:

  • Prātaḥkāla – early morning
  • Madhyāhna – midday
  • Aparāhṇa – late afternoon
  • Sāyāhṇa – evening

Aparāhṇa is often considered a suitable time for certain rituals, meditation,
or afternoon prayers. For example, in the context of the Sandhya rites,
which are performed at junctures of the day, aparāhṇa sandhyā may
refer to offerings or recitations performed in the late afternoon.
Cultural Context

In Ayurveda and daily schedules (dinacharya), this time of the day is
also associated with wind and fire elements, and people are traditionally
advised to engage in light activity, study, or spiritual practice during this
period to harmonize with natural rhythms.

In summary, "aparāhṇa" denotes the late afternoon period, situated
between the post-noon hours and the early evening, recognized in
Sanskrit literature, Hindu ritual observances, and traditional
daily routines.
