Pauṣya

The word "Pauṣya" is represented in

Devanagari as “पौष्य”

Pauṣya, known as Pausha in Sanskrit, is a sacred month
in the Hindu lunar calendar, associated with spiritual
practices, devotion, and certain important religious
observances.

Timing and Calendar Context

Pauṣya is the tenth month in the Hindu lunar calendar, typically
falling between December and January in the Gregorian calendar.
It follows the month of Dhanu and precedes Magha. The month
is divided into two fortnights: the bright half (Shukla Paksha
and the dark half (Krishna Paksha), in which various religious
observances and fasts are observed.

Religious and Spiritual Significance

Pauṣya is considered an auspicious period for spiritual growth
and penance. Many Hindus engage in extra prayers, fasting,
and charitable acts, as the month is believed to promote peace,
purification of mind and body, and prosperity. It is traditionally
associated with Lord Vishnu and Krishna, and worship toward
these deities is especially emphasized during certain markable
days in the month.

Major Festivals and Observances

Cultural Practices

During Pauṣya, devotees may:

  • Observe fasting on certain days to purify karmic debts.
  • Conduct religious recitations of scriptures, especially
  • Vishnu-related texts.
  • Engage in donation and charity, considered especially
  • meritorious this month.

Symbolic Importance

The month of Pauṣya is seen as a time of cleansing and spiritual
reflection. It emphasizes self-discipline, devotion, and preparation
for the upcoming New Year (Magha) in the Hindu calendar. The
alignment with winter months also symbolizes light overcoming
darkness, linking seasonal cycles with spiritual growth.
