Śrāvaṇa

Śravaṇa (श्रावण) is the fifth month of the Hindu

lunisolar calendar, considered highly auspicious

for religious observances, devotion to Lord Shiva,

and various fasting and ritual practices.

Sanskrit Name and Meaning

The month is called Śravaṇa (श्रावण) in Sanskrit. The term
originates from the nakṣatra Śravaṇā (श्रवणा), one of the
27 lunar mansions (nakṣatras), and it generally corresponds to
the period of July–August in the Gregorian calendar. It is
considered a rainy season month (Varṣā Rtu), which
symbolizes fertility, abundance, and cleansing.

Religious Significance

Śravaṇa is highly revered in Hinduism for spiritual practices
and devotion, particularly towards Lord Shiva (शिव). Devotees
often observe Śravaṇa Somvar Vrat (fasts on Mondays), as
Mondays in this month are believed to grant blessings,
prosperity, and the removal of sins. Many also perform
Rudrabhisheka and visit Shiva temples during this period.
The month is associated with the worship of other deities
as well, including Lord Vishnu (particularly in the form of
Jagannath and Krishna), reflecting traditional festivals
and rituals like Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi), which occurs in
Śravaṇa, emphasizing familial bonds and protection.

Cultural Practices

Fasting and Devotion:

Participants often undertake vegetarian diets or partial fasting,
engaging in prayers, chanting Shiva mantras, and reading
sacred texts.

Pilgrimages:

Pilgrimages to sacred rivers and temples increase during this
month. Rivers are considered purifying, and collecting water
from holy sites is a common practice.

Festivals:

Significant festivals like Raksha Bandhan (रक्षाबन्धन) and
Nag Panchami (नाग पंचमी) fall in Śravaṇa, making it
culturally vibrant month.

Seasonal Aspect:

Being the heart of the monsoon season in India, Śravaṇa is also
seen as a time of agricultural renewal and environmental
significance, celebrating rain, rivers, and greenery.

Spiritual Symbolism

The month symbolizes purification, devotion, and penance
In Hindu astrology, engaging in rituals during Śravaṇa is said
to amplify spiritual merit (puṇya) and facilitate personal
transformation. The combination of the pious season, abundant
rainfall, and celestial alignments makes this month ideal for
introspection and religious observances.

In summary, Śravaṇa (श्रावण) is both a spiritually potent and
culturally rich month in the Hindu calendar, devoted to Shiva
worship, intensive fasting practices, and observances that
strengthen familial and societal bonds, celebrated against
the backdrop of monsoon rejuvenation.
