Vedic Usage

In the Rigveda, "sapatnī" refers specifically to a woman who 

shares the same husband with another woman, essentially a 

fellow-wife. In the first and last Maṇḍalas of the Rigveda, 

the term is associated with this familial context and also 

implies the notion of rivalry between co-wives

In post-Vedic Sanskrit, the meaning of "sapatnī" expands beyond the 

domestic sphere and is used as a synonym for 'rival' or 'female 

opponent', indicating someone who competes or contends
